Geographical location of West Azerbayjan province: The area of West Azerbayjan including the orumieh Lake is about 43660 square kilometers. This northwestern province of Iran is about 2.25% of total area of country is located between 35 degrees and 58 minutes to 39 degrees and 46 minutes north latitude (from equator) and 44 degrees and 3 minutes to 47 degrees and 23 minutes east longitude. The province encompasses the northern region of the Iranian plateau has been covered with a large sea during the third geological age which called Tetis. During the Senorotic age that includes the third and fourth ages, vast transformations in the earth's crust and enormous volcanic eruptions led to emergence of high mountains such as Ararat, Caucasus, Zagros, Sabalan and Sahand and finally the Azerbayjan plateau appeared to the present shape. |

The West Azerbayjan known for its vast fertile lands, lofty mountains, mild and gentle weather, its full of fresh water rivers, vineyards, orchards, green forests and azure lake is one of the most beautiful and attractive regions of Iran. This province including 14 cities, 35 sectors and 109 rural districts have a population of 2496320 and the Orumieh city is its capital. Nagade, Mahabad, Oshnavieh, Sardasht, Piranshahr, Bookan, Miandoab, Tekab, Shahindej, Salmas, Chalderan and Makoo are the territories of this province. The majority of people are muslims and speak Turkish, Kurdish, and some religious minorities speak Assyrian and Armenian |
